June 15 2022 The Martinez Sturgeon defeated the Santa Cruz Seaweed 8-2 at Joe DiMaggio Park, using a nine-hit attack and a dominant complete-game performance from Manny Corpas. Martinez improved to 19-31 while Santa Cruz fell to 17-33.
Darwin Tavarez delivered the decisive offensive performance for Martinez, going 2-for-3 with two home runs and seven RBIs. He drove in all four of Martinez’s runs in the sixth inning, turning a 4-2 game into an 8-2 advantage. Tavarez also scored twice. Jordan Jackson went 2-for-4 with two runs, while Robert Malone added two hits, including a triple, and scored once.
Martinez scored once in the second inning, added three runs in the fourth and broke the game open with four runs in the sixth. Santa Cruz scored its only runs in the second and third innings and finished with four hits. Joe Riddle had two of the Seaweed’s hits, and Ron Jackson scored once and stole five bases.
Corpas earned the win by throwing all nine innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out 13 and walking three. Anthony Garcia took the loss for Santa Cruz, while A. Lopez allowed eight runs, seven earned, on eight hits over 5.1 innings with eight strikeouts and three walks. Nick Samudio and Brezner Mendoza combined to hold Martinez scoreless over the final 2.2 innings.
